Stretch de-bondable tape-1

US005516581A teaches a method to make a stretchable de-bondable tape, where the tape carrier is a highly extensible film (or others) with low elastic recovery (preferably less than 30%). This property could be useful for the indication of tampering and ensureing single use in certain applications.

The adhesives can be acrylic, rubber, and/or others with high cohesive strength to ensure interfacial failure (no cohesive failure) in de-bonding process. Preferably, the adhesive can be highly extensible. The tape structure is shown in the following figure.

When external force is applied with an angle up to 35 degree, the carrier will start to deform. The adhesive, sandwiched between tape carrier and substrate, goes through an extension transferred from carrier and starts to orient along the force direction, leading to a stiffening effect. Consequently the adhesion between adhesive and substrate decreases. If the adhesion is less than both tensile strength of carrier and shear strength of adhesive, the separation of adhesive from the adherent occurs, which is the mechanism of stretch debonding. The following figure shows the process.
