Dynamic shear is an important parameter to evaluate the cohesive strength of a PSA. It is commonly measured based on the ASTM D1002.
The testing samples can be prepared according to the above figure. The pink area is the adhesive overlapped between two ends of metal strips. The dimension of the metal strips are defined as the above. The materials and surface roughness requirements are defined in ASTM D 1002.
The samples is loaded in the testing instrument, e.g. instron, and pulled at a typical rate of 0.05 inch/minute. The shear strength is calculated by the force divided by the overlapping area.
