Bridges in Big Sur

Big Sur is a lightly populated, unincorporated region on California’s Central Coast where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. The coast is frequently praised for its rugged coastline and mountain views. As the “longest and most scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous United States,” it has been described as a “national treasure that demands extraordinary procedures to protect it from development” and “one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world, an isolated stretch of road, mythic in reputation.” The stunning views make Big Sur a popular tourist destination (ref. 1).

Big Sur Coastline

California has so many beautiful coastlines and beaches; the dark side is that it is causing so-called “aesthetical fatigue”. However these two bridges are quite attractive to me.

Bixby Creek Bridge, a reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridge on the Big Sur coast of California, is one of the most photographed bridges in California due to its aesthetic design, “graceful architecture and magnificent setting”(ref. 2).

Furthermore, both Rocky Creek Bridge and Rocky Creek bridge were built in 1932. It was one of the tallest single-span concrete bridges in the world.  Let’s give the builders a big hand!
